Finance Manager – Department Head (Intern)

    Position Title:                                              Finance Manager – Department Head (Intern)

    Department:                                                Organizational Finance Development 

    Employment Term:                                    1 Year + (min. 10 hours - max. 20 hours weekly)

    Reports to:                                                   President & Assistant Program Director(s) 

    Salary:                                                          *Unpaid Internship / Volunteer*

 



Responsibilities:

Reporting to the President and Assistant Program Directors, in close coordination with the staff accountants and Donor & Partner Communications Specialist and working closely with headquarters and field staff, the Finance Manager will play a contributing role in:


  • Oversight over all Finance and Accounting tasks: manage, collaborate, and assign tasks per departmental sub-roles.

  • Providing support in FDSF procurement and compliance assistance; ensure organization’s compliance with financial management regulations 

  • Reviewing and analyzing project expenses versus actual expenses on a line-by-line and global budget basis to ensure funding for fiscal year.

  • Reviewing program subgrantee reports and invoices from vendors, partners, sponsors, and donors. 

  • Oversees grant receivables and ensures frequent communication with grantors. Reviews journal entries for grant related transactions and any necessary adjustments.

  • Reviewing and executing requests for disbursement for project expense needs.

  • Assisting with other financial and accounting matters as needed.

  • Prepare budget for upcoming fiscal year; approve or reject budget proposals as necessary

  • Implements fiscal measures to control expenditures, reviews and authorizes the processing of purchase requisitions.

  • Regularly reads and is familiar with all grant contract requirements, deadlines, reporting requirements, and any other pertinent information; monitors and ensures fiscal compliance of grants and contracts. 

  • Provides robust modeling and analysis of grants and contracts to determine spend down plans, modification requests, and support for program decisions.

  • Leads regular meetings with department directors and senior management about spending, trends, concerns, and trajectories of current grant contracts.

  • May research and make recommendations concerning computer hardware and software options to satisfy organizational automation needs. May research and make recommendations concerning computer hardware and software options to satisfy organizational automation needs.




Preferred Qualification and Skills:

  • Positive attitude, vibrant, energetic, willingness to bring new ideas and work in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Interest and background in financial management and leadership 

  • Diligence and strict attention to detail

  • Strong focus on deliverables and results.

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques of budget preparation and of methods of expense control.

  • Demonstrate use of computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Outlook, and financial management software

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.


Requirements: 

  • Attend mandatory orientation and training.

  • Able to participate in team meetings: Teamwork and collaboration will be necessary for success in this role. 

  • Some flexibility with nights and weekends especially for urgent tasks and deadlines.

  • Must be comfortable with deadlines and have a reliable working computer or laptop.



Working Environment: 

This internship opportunity is 100% virtual. Volunteers will utilize Microsoft Teams and Outlook to communicate with their team.


*Although this is advertised as an unpaid volunteer/internship opportunity, students can use this opportunity to receive credits for their courses or Capstone programs. Stipends can/will be provided to students based on program funds.
